From the moment I ventured into freelance consulting, I had the intention to dedicate a part of my earnings to better the lives of others, once my own financial milestones, like paying off my mortgage, were met. Yet, the unforeseen challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic and the turmoil following the Russian invasion of Ukraine served as stark reminders that life's course is both precious and unpredictable. This realization prompted a shift in my perspective: the time to make a meaningful difference is now, not later.
Inspired by the principles of Effective Altruism and the community at Giving What We Can, I've been moved by the call to commit publicly to donating a significant portion of my income effective charities. The initiative outlines two paths: a personal pledge and a corporate one, advocating for the donation of 10% of personal income or company profits, respectively. Embracing both, I've chosen to adapt these pledges to better align with my vision—pledging to donate 10% of my company's revenue, not just the profits. This adjustment ensures my commitment is woven directly into the fabric of my business, making it a living, breathing aspect of my work and not just an afterthought.
My focus is on supporting innovations in alternative proteins and enhancing animal welfare—efforts aimed at transforming our global food system for the better. What this means, in effect, is that 10% of what I invoice my clients is directly invested in addressing some of our era’s most pressing environmental and ethical challenges. When you choose to work with me, you’re not just investing in analytics services; you’re also contributing to a movement towards a more compassionate and sustainable future.
I recognise that I can use part of my income to do a significant amount of good. Since I can manage with smaller income, I pledge that from January 2022 forward I shall give at least 10% (ten percent) of my company’s revenue to whichever organisations can most effectively use it to improve the lives of others, now and in the years to come. I make this pledge freely, openly, and sincerely.
